Welcome to the Plainville Historical Society

Keeping Local History Alive Through Preservation, Inspiration, and Education

Established in 1968 under the leadership of the legendary Ruth Hummel, the Plainville Historical Society has been keeping local history alive for over 50 years. Our goal is to accomplish this through:

  • Collecting and preserving resources including documents, photographs, memorabilia, or other objects related to Plainville or considered to be relevant Americana.
  • Providing public accessibility to the Plainville Historic Center which the Society maintains as a research center, museum, offices, and store.
  • Promoting interest in local history through programs, media, education, and personalized assistance with research and genealogy.

Our video digitization project is well under way. Using grants from CT Humanities and Norton Trust, we have digitized many VHS tapes recorded in years past and are now uploading them to our new YouTube channel. Technical quality of the tapes is not always the best, but these videos are truly a local history treasure!

We have also added some new videos. Click on the link above to check out three new ones :

Our First Program For 2025

Our first 2025 program is on January 11th. Richard DeLuca, author of Post Roads & Iron Horses published by Wesleyan University, will tell the interesting story of Connecticut transportation from colonial times through about 1900. Roads, canals, coaches, boats, and railroads - find out what traveling from one place to another was all about! And since Plainville was somewhat of a transportation hub, come early to see some local items we are displaying.

Please see more details on the right. When emailing to register, please include name, phone number, and number of people. Snow date is January 18th.

Note: We will be closed on Monday December 30th and Wednesday January 1st.
